CART - RUTS
|
|
Gozo has four good sets of the mysterious cart-ruts, and a few minor ones. At Tan-Nemes, well east of Qala, a pair runs out onto a spur overlooking the Fliegu ta’ Għawdex. At Ta’ Tingi, several fine pairs can be found in the olive grove west of the pumping station, just south of Xewkija. An extensive system covers the Ta’ Ċenċ plateau, best seen between the hotel and the cliffs, and running near, but not to, Borġ l-Imramma. They continue for nearly a kilometre to the east. An impressive pair zigzags down the slope from the San Lawrenz quarries to end on the cliffs above the Azure Widow at Dwejra.

How to go: The following is indicative of three areas in Gozo covered by cart ruts.
The most easily accessible and the best preserved are those at Ta' Ċenċ, reached by following signs from Sannat village square. They are to the West of the water reservoir, almost on the edge of the sea cliffs (to be approached with caution).
More cart ruts are at Ta' Lambert close to Xewkija, reached by a path going South next to the Santa Ċeċilja Tower (towards the Gozo Heliport) on the Victoria-Mġarr road just before entering Għajnsielem. After some 500 metres, a footpath to the West brings you over the area.
Still more cart ruts are at Ras il-Qala (Qala Point). Proceed through Qala up to the shrine of Our Lady as if going to Ħondoq Bay. Then, just past the chapel to the left, take the lane going north and continue along the footpath up to the Eastern tip of Gozo. The cart ruts are in an area known as Is-Sidra.
