FOLKLORE MUSEUM
The late medieval houses in Milite Bernardo Street now housing the Folklore Museum were probably built towards the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16 century. The house in the middle is the oldest while the southern one seems to have been the last to be built. The architectural features are basically Sicilian, possibly betraying Catalan influence and may owe some of the features to the style diffused by the Chiaramonte family in Sicily and Southern Italy at a time when they enjoyed the status of Counts of Malta in the late 14th century. It seems that this style survived locally after it had become obsolete in Sicily.

The interior of the houses is pleasant while the facades with their rounded doorways and heavy voussoirs in the arches, double windows divided by a slender coloumn and delicately carved stone work are indeed impressive. These houses are unique outstanding examples of late medieval domestic architecture, though it must be said that other examples are also found in Mdina and Birgu in Malta. To ensure their preservation the houses were acquired by the Government in 1981. The building was subsequently restored and turned into a Folklore Museum. The Museum houses a wide range of exhibits related to the domestic and rural traditional way of life of the Gozitans in years gone by.
