Festa of St. Paul - Munxar
|
The community of the small but beautiful village of Munxar opens the annual religious festive season with the Feast of the Shipwreck of Saint Paul. The feast often falls on the last Sunday of May of each year. It is the climax of a week long religious and cultural celebrations held in this picturesque village.
Munxar lies on the very southern tip of Victoria and its church was built between 1914 and 1925. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 2nd February 1914 and was consecrated on 18 October 1925. It was established as a parish by Bishop Joseph Pace on 12th December, 1957.
Munxar was the last village in Gozo to become an autonomous parish. Its name is a very old Maltese name that literally means "a saw". The most probable origin of the name comes from the natural bucksaw shape of the edge of Ras il-Bajjada cliffs that zigzag along in the vicinity.
